Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity

If I were to ask you the question – “How’s your health?”

What would you think I meant?

Most people I speak to immediately go to equate my question with wellness – physical and mental health wellness – not the encompassing well-being. Very few ever mention or even consider their social well-being. “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” World Health Organization, 1948.

Do you expect a Carrot or the stick???

Two theories have greatly impacted me and my perceptions of life – Douglas McGregor’s “Theory X and Theory Y” and Dan Pink’s “Intrinsic Motivation”. Working in the military certainly challenged my view – do people do what they do from the aspect of being afraid of a result or from the perspective of the pleasure they will gain?

Boundaries are Scary!!!

That was a response that I had from several people (concerningly women) to some questions I posed recently, and it surprised me. I thought I would get responses to the effect that boundaries are hard and difficult but necessary and other words to that effect.

What makes boundaries hard, particularly for women in this case? Just to be transparent, the rest of this article will predominantly focus on women as I didn’t have enough responses from men to generalise. Some women expressed that trying to have and assert boundaries, brought so much conflict and confrontation with the activity that it wasn’t worth it to them. Others find safety in boundaries.

Boundaries can be difficult to put in place and practice…???

Following on from my last article, “no matter what the current opinion of the individual, finding what’s right for you in terms of boundaries can be a challenging activity or series of activities. It always starts with your values – the things that are super-important to you – be it health, hard work, integrity, family, or any number of other values. From there though, it’s breaking down what you will accept and what you won’t accept in terms of behaviours.”

3 months from now, you could have much more ease and joy…

Does this sound familiar?

You’re spending more than enough time with your family… but your family feels otherwise.

You focus on your business or work… after all, if it isn’t for the business or your work, you can’t support your family.

Then before you know it, your business/work has taken over your life. Maybe you’ve had a moment of clarity, maybe you haven’t… yet. The moment of clarity hits and you realise that if you didn’t do something, you are going to lose the most important things in your life, starting with your family.

Work/Life Balance… Really?

The purpose of this article is to encourage you to pause and think about your current circumstances, why you are where you are (have you chosen it or have societal pressures shaped you?) and if it suits your purpose/desired outcomes. If not, what are your options?
