“Just” be more resilient

This is a criticism that I’ve heard re-emerging over the last few years when someone isn’t coping with circumstances. I have to say that to me, it really shows the character of the person uttering the words and I’m not being complimentary here.

Health promotion and prevention is such a better investment

It struck me how closely aligned I am to the authors of this article where I believe that spending money on health promotion and prevention is such a better investment than paying for treatment and potential cures.

McKinsey Health Institute “proposes disproportionately investing in disease prevention and health promotion in addition to treatment to help people truly thrive. Promotion is defined here as actions that help individuals achieve and sustain the best possible physical, mental, social, and spiritual health given their intrinsic biological capacity.”

Workplace Wellbeing

I’ll start by reinforcing that gym memberships, meditation, morning teas, etc are great. Workplace wellbeing is so much more though.

Do people feel safe to speak?

Whether it’s a new idea or to ask someone to stop a behaviour – do people feel safe to raise it without fears of ramifications or being laughed at?

Can they provide legitimate feedback without having a superior just grunt at them that their answer isn’t good enough?

Can difficult topics be discussed without emotions escalating to name calling and other un-helpful actions?

Wellbeing Challenges in the Workplace

Are you noticing that your team (or team members) aren’t performing as well as they have previously? It could even be your peers or boss.

What else have you noticed? Maybe they are now rushing into work and rushing to leave at the end of the day, where they used to be relaxed.

Maybe they aren’t taking breaks. There are so many behavioural changes that can indicate an issue to you – you just have to be aware and take notice.

Is Wellbeing about physical environment?

I’ve had a number of comments recently about the well-being side of my business relating to physical ailments and preventable life-style diseases in the workplace. That’s actually not what I’m about. There is so much more to well-being and a healthy workplace than the physical environment and so begins my education piece. A healthy workplace is my vision when I work with others and to quote In Business Australia, it “starts with an integrated approach to wellbeing and mental health. An integrated approach incorporates considered actions across departments and functions in order to build a positive work environment.”
