Are you taking a break for the holidays?

No alt text provided for this imageIt’s almost Christmas…

again!

Do you have a plan for your break?

Or are you all out of plans and going to just let it unfold?

When I say plan, what I mean is, do you have outcomes that you want to ‘achieve’ from the break?

Taking a break can have health benefits if we use it constructively.

What do I mean by constructively?

Firstly, I recommend taking stock on yourself and how your body and mind are feeling. For the person who is struggling to stay focused until their last day of work, it might mean literally sleeping and taking themselves away from ‘everything’ to allow time to recharge and their bodies and mind to be able to function again.

For the person who is brimming with energy, it might mean planning time to go on extended activities – hiking, biking, all the ‘jobs’ around the house that you haven’t been able to do during the year.

Or it could be a mixture of all the above and more, at different times. Your Health Type plays a huge role in this with each health type doing things differently. Then within each health type, the individuality of the person makes how they take breaks, different again.

Once we’ve taken stock of how we are, think about expectations.

  • What expectations do you have for the break?
  • What expectations do your loved ones have for the break?
  • Are the expectations matched?
  • How can you have the break you need and still meet expectations?

Schedule… yes I went there.

There are times when you even need to schedule what happens on your breaks.

Schedule days that you know are unlikely to go to plan – that could be from any perspective… eating, alcohol consumption, activity. Identify the ones that you expect will be ‘hiccups’. At the same time, schedule days where you do the things you have already identified that you need for yourself. Perhaps allow yourself the grace of some days where you don’t know whether they’ll go to plan or not and be okay with that.

If you have been following me for a while, you’ll know that I tend to focus on the way stress effects the body and mind. As a Wellbeing Mentor/Health Coach I am encouraging everyone to take a break, in the form that they need, to lessen their stress.

I also actively encourage reflection (with a view to making things better). A few questions you might like to ask yourself:

1.     What went really well over 2022?

2.     What didn’t go so well during 2022?

3.     What lessons can I take forward into 2023 and beyond?

4.     How do I make sure that the ‘good’ sticks and the ‘not-so-good’ doesn’t repeat?

Use your break to not only let go of 2022 but prepare for 2023 and taking the next steps towards the life that you desire to live.
