Have you chalked up a lifestyle disease yet?

After weeks of noticing articles about ‘health’ in my inbox each morning from the daily news, today I found an article that was actually worth my time to read. It wasn’t anything that I didn’t know, but it is useful to see that it’s in print and available – “Why it’s becoming nearly impossible to be healthy in Australia” by Dr Sandro Demaio.

There was no one size fits all advice in the article. Thank goodness!

Just reality – that 50% of our population in Australia is living with chronic disease. Dr Demaio’s recommended solutions did not focus more medicalisation or building more health facilities but real action we can take preventatively.

Yes – to stop the chronic disease from occurring in the first place.

The odds are increasingly stacked against us when it comes to making healthy choices. Advertising, supermarket product placement, reading and understanding labels, even where we live – we are set up to make bad choices. This is where knowledge comes to the fore, as does leading by example for the next generation. Even though we KNOW processed food is bad for us, we still buy and consume it. We KNOW sugar and alcohol is inflammatory and overall, not the best for us, but we see more and more advertising of products that contain sugar and alcohol. The exposure is constant and growing.

For my generation at least (I am going to generalise) we have abused our bodies. I’m not talking about anything illegal here either. I’m talking about alcohol, late nights, sunburn, partying, exercise, over-eating, under-eating, bad food choices, the risks we’ve taken, the information and societal conditioning we’ve absorbed, just to name a few.

Our bodies have been made in a way to absorb and correct much of the ‘torture’ we put them through…

Until.

Until the body cannot rectify the damage anymore.

Then we get lifestyle diseases – many of them chronic and oh so preventable.

We have access to SO much information today – so much that it’s overwhelming. I remember doing some research when I was about 13. I wanted to be a doctor, but after speaking to my GP decided that I wouldn’t follow that career path – there was too much study involved to keep on top of all the new and emerging health research and recommendations. That was 1984/1985. Then the internet arrived into my household about 12 or 13 years after that, and ka-boom!

How do I address the issues above?

I kept looking. I tried out all the ‘new’ diets, exercise regimes, work practices, home practices, everything and anything that offered a slim hope of improving the way my body works and that would give my mind space to just… “think” so I could cope with it all. Enter chronic illness #1… Let’s face it, if we don’t pay attention to our bodies, we get to a point that we can no longer ignore what it’s saying. The body remembers just as well, if not better, than the mind. It remembers all the trauma, miniscule through to major, that we put it through – the genes that have been activated or dulled by any and all stimuli.

Then I found ph360 – a program that synthesises all the best evidence-based practices from a variety of medical sciences. It validated so much – not only dietary intake and exercise, but so many lifestyle aspects as well. This is lifechanging and really wholistic, considering each person within their environment or their particular ecosystem. The program adapts to body condition and adjusts recommendations depending upon the stresses on the body and mind at any particular moment in time.

This is only the beginning of the community having more choice in preventative care and preventative health – aligning the symptoms that are not yet significant enough to seek medical intervention, with customised and individualised advice to rectify them before they REALLY become a health issue.

So much more to come.
