We’re already more than halfway through October 2022. Every year it feels like time slips away faster and faster!
It’s about this time that we start (if not already well underway) planning for Christmas here in Australia – oh, and the parties. Every year there seem to be more end of year party obligations. Or is it just me?
I know in the last few years, I hear more and more about people wondering how to control their weight and still be “festive”.
There’ll be lots of advice on what to eat and drink, and how to avoid all the excess calories. I’d really like to throw other considerations in though – social expectations and pressures, and stress.
For the month of October, my posts have been focussing on stress, the effects for different Health Types and a tip or two for each Health Type.
In November, I’m going to be running a series of posts about nutrition and how it differs for every body and differs when you have different stressors or activities going on.
For this newsletter however, I’m going to stand up tall on my ‘soap box’ and using an epigenetics lens, have a good poke at the advertisements and articles we see about diets and exercising.
There is no ONE way for all bodies.
Please read that again.
Just because a person your brother knows whose cousin’s sister-in-law’s aunt lost half her body weight doing xyz, does NOT mean that you will. Sure, give it a go, but wouldn’t it be easier to know what will work for your body? Take the guess work out?
I published a case study last week about a fitness professional who was putting on weight despite his high level of exercise and significant dietary control. It doesn’t seem right does it? It goes against what we are told about ‘calories in/calories out’.
The problem causing the weight gain wasn’t the actual level of exercise and amount he was eating. Rather, it was the stress he was putting on his body through his practices. A re-scheduling of times he exercised and time he was eating, along with some refinement of his dietary intake led to a loss of 13kg in 3 months. Let me be clear here – the original dietary intake was as recommended by many professionals. It just wasn’t right for him.
It was an awesome example of how increasing activity levels and eating really cleanly did not help.

My recommendation as we move into the season of parties and what some might call ‘silliness’?
Know what causes your body biological stress. It could be so many things of varying priorities for YOUR body, then listen to your body as you address those priorities. Then you can enjoy the season and not have excess kilos on kilos to lose come 2023.
